Devilman and other characters from the series have shown up in cameo appearances numerous times in Go Nagai's other works. The series has since spawned numerous OVAs, manga, novels, films, and a sequel. Seven Seas Entertainment published the English translation of the original manga in two volumes in 2018. It's because he subconsciously wanted to make Akira into a worthy partner for himself in his personal rebellion against God. When you're talking about someone as psychotic and socially isolated as Ryo any love is ultimate love. In the end it doesn't matter where you draw the line on different kinds of love. I think that Ryo's willingness to shoot at and murder people who aren't Akira speaks volumes to his love for his only friend. Whether he loved Akira platonically or romantically barely matters if he's literally the only person he has ever cared about, period. So its all these side things that imply it further that makes people sure thats the intention of the author, and since the author confirmed it theres no question left about itįor someone who has only ever known one person's love the distinction might not exist. I was too dumb to understand what in the world was going on in the first chapter but it ended on a very queer note :PĪnd then of course perhaps my favourite is that CB chara world anime from years ago with the funnier salty clearly jealous depiction of Ryo lol There's Neo Devilman which is a bunch of random spin off stories not all written by Go Nagai but I believe at least approved by him. There's the implications in Devilman Lady which I wont spoil for you if you havent read that one, but if you wanna know then i can message you Theres a side manga called "Summer Days" by Go Nagai himself, a short story with Akira and Miki playing at the beach and imo Ryo seemed very obviously jealous in that one xD once again you could say its just a strong friendship, but love is love and i took it as a strong implication for him being in love with akiraĪs for other medias, a bunch of spin offs and side series of the devilman franchise are more explicit of it. I felt the implication lay mostly in his words when he said "there is no love, therefore there is no sorrow, thats what i thought." in my opinion I think this is pretty much an outright confession that he now admits love exists but it was already too late. I'm currently reading whatever content I can find, but still havent finished most of it including the original manga.Īs far as crybaby is concerned, there is definitely a strong bond there, considering the only reason he made akira a devil was so he could live on with him, but I can see how that can be taken to mean many things.
